CISNEROS: Well, I was fresh out of graduate school. MONTAGNE: Sandra Cisneros, give us a little sense of what the world was like when you created Esperanza. But in Spanish my name is made out of a softer something, like silver. At school they say my name funny, as if the syllables were made out of tin and hurt the roof of your mouth. It is the Mexican records my father plays on Sunday mornings when he is shaving, songs like sobbing. It is like the number nine, a muddy color. SANDRA CISNEROS (Author, "House On Mango Street"): In English, my name means hope. Here author Sandra Cisneros reads from the chapter called "My Name." and is being celebrated with a special 25th anniversary edition. The story of Esperanza Cordero has become required reading for students across the U.S. It's a series of exquisitely observed vignettes stitched from the experiences of a Mexican-American girl and the characters swirling around her tumble-down Chicago neighborhood. "The House On Mango Street" is more patchwork quilt than novel. A beloved book about adolescence has just turned 25. I’m talking make sure you have Heir of Fire next to you so you can start it straight away. Oh my, you are going to be well and truly shocked and left cliff hanged. What other adjectives can I throw in here?įirst off I have to go straight into THAT ENDING. The whole plot is just so interesting, captivating and engaging. On plot alone this book would get 5/5 stars from. I don’t know how Sarah J.MAAS does it, every time she writes I swear she knocks it out of the park. In 1926, his most complex novel Les faux-monnayeurs ("The Counterfeiters") was published. The autobiographical Si le grain ne meurt ("If It Die.", 1924) is regarded as one of the great works of confessional literature. Later notable works include The L'Immoraliste ("The Immoralist", 1902), La Porte Étroite ("Strait is the Gate", 1907) and La Symphonie pastorale ("The Pastoral Symphony", 1919). André Gide's early works such as the prose poem Les nourritures terrestres ("Fruits of the Earth", 1897) were influenced by French symbolism. Rather, it's a call to the white community for repentance and self-examination, to the black community to cultivate forgiveness without condoning wrong, and to everybody to extend our borders of love to the whole human community. But this is not a propaganda piece aiming to stoke the fires of angry racial grievance and reverse racism. :-( So protagonist Alena's world in 1919 here remains very relevant to ours in the 2020s. And while some things have obviously changed for the better in the more than a century that has elapsed since the time re-created here, sadly, in a great many minds and hearts there hasn't been much if any change. Foster casts an unsparing floodlight on the whole mentality of racial hatred and white supremacy, and the starkly ugly ways in which it expresses itself. Obviously, racial relations and attitudes are at the heart of this novel. In a plot that's set mainly from the late spring to the early fall of 1919 (the final chapter takes place in the following year) the lives of the author's fictional characters unfold against a real-life background of rampant lynching of blacks and of the racial riots during what history would remember as the "Red Summer." Evangelical Christian author Sharon Ewell Foster became the first (and so far only) African-American writer to win the Christy Award for this powerful historical novel, set just after World War I in rural Jim Crow MIssissippi and in Chicago (also not a paradise of racial brotherhood). Earned Citizenship argues that long-term unauthorized immigrant residents should be able to earn legalization and a pathway to citizenship through service in their adopted communities. On one hand it is important that the government sends a message that future violations of immigration law will not be tolerated. I will say that it’s a good selection but it could have been better had the publisher included Batman #59, the very first appearance of Deadshot. Contentĭeadshot Beginnings collects the mini-series Deadshot #1-4, Batman #369, and Detective Comics #474 & #518. It’s a selection that’s quite varied in its approach to the mythology and I think that that only served to make it a more enjoyable read. We may begin with a gritty 1988 mini-series that sees Floyd Lawton become a walking holocaust as he pursues the kidnappers who took his son but by the end we will have seen Deadshot fight Batman atop a giant typewriter in a selection of comics from the late 70’s. Holy tonal-shift, Batman! This collection of the villainous marksman’s most memorable stories is a showcase of comics at their darkest as well as their most wholesome. Alfred had a daughter? Thorne had removed Gordon from office and put Batman on the wanted list? Deadshot’s son was abducted?! We've seen a lot of excitement around this tool already, and very strong adoption at Google. Keras Tuner: this is a next-generation hyperparameter tuning framework built for Keras. It enables models to accept raw text or raw images as input. This covers things like text standardization, tokenization, vectorization, image normalization and random data augmentation. So, the new approach we're taking is to make preprocessing part of the model, via "preprocessing layers". This becomes a significant issue when you want to port your model to JavaScript, for instance, which is otherwise easy to do for Keras models. And that pipeline has to behave in the exact same way as the original one - or the model will break. However, this kind of external preprocessing makes models less portable: every time someone reuses a model you've trained, they need to also recreate the preprocessing pipeline. Historically we've delegated preprocessing to auxiliary tools written in NumPy and PIL (the Python Imaging Library). Preprocessing layers and redesigned image preprocessing API: Here are some of the big new features we've launched recently or are about to launch: Francois Chollet: Keras in 2020 is continuing its evolution as an end-to-end framework for deep learning applications. |
